Group decries KAI’s actions

The Social and Economic Rights Action Centre (SERAC), a non-governmental organization, has decried what it called the invasion of a section of the Makoko community by the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) Brigade between 19th and 22nd April, 2010, culminating in "the forcible eviction of the residents and destruction of their homes, and properties."

At a recent press conference in Lagos, the Executive Director of the centre, Mr. Felix Morka, in a statement lamented what he called "acts of lawlessness, indiscipline and brutality perpetrated by officials of the KAI Brigade."

According to the statement, a certain Captain Paul Rheas (retd.) was fingered in the use of the Brigade and armed soldiers to terrorize, intimidate and harass residents of the community in "his bid to commence the fencing of the land in question," even as the captain was further alleged to have been accompanied by six soldiers who shot sporadically into the air, causing panic and stampede in the community and adjourning neighbourhoods on 3rd May, 2010.

The statement concluded that "Acts such as perpetrated by the KAI Brigade can undermine the implementation of the LAGOS Metropolitan Development and Governance Project (LMDGP), a $200million World Bank-funded project, with far-reaching consequences, " while calling on Governor Raji Fashola to do a full investigation into the incident.
